Bali rides a new wave of flavour

Australian chefs are turning the island into a global food-lovers' favourite.

IN THE 2½ years since former Sydneysider Kath Townsend took on the executive chef role at luxury Ubud resort Maya, she has witnessed a momentum that shows no signs of slowing.
''This season has been insane … and my first one was a record for Bali, despite the global financial crisis in Australia,'' Townsend says. ''The high season used to start at the end of June; now it starts at the beginning, even in Ubud, and we're supposed to be the village, boutique area.''
Townsend has worked in Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and spent several years as Bill Granger's right-hand woman at Bills in Darlinghurst.

She says there has been an influx of Australian chefs in Bali. It can feel as if there are more award-winning foreign chefs and restaurateurs there now than there are surfers, at least in the busiest areas of Seminyak, Legian and Ubud.
Townsend reels off a few names: Stephen Moore, a former Rockpool guy at Cocoon Beach Club in Kuta; and in Ubud, Nicolas Lazzaroni, a chef who made a name for himself in Byron Bay and ''takes his food very seriously at Bridges''.
''The general managers here really like Aussie chefs,'' Townsend says. ''They think we have a 'give it a go' attitude. I've been employable in Asia because they tell me I'm not like some European chefs; I don't have the 'this is my kitchen, stay out' attitude. We get on with it.''

There are many theories about the flourishing dining scene. One highlights the ''new'' money coming in from Jakarta, China, Russia and India. There is also the fact that Italians and the French have always loved Bali and, as economic woes dog Europe, the island's value for money, great weather and exoticism make it a perfect alternative.
Australian interest is also part of the picture: the number of Australian tourists choosing Bali for their holidays rose about 27 per cent (on the previous year) and was nudging 350,000 in the first half of last year.
New Zealander Phil Davenport is executive chef at Ku De Ta in Seminyak. Like many of his island-bound colleagues, Davenport was known in Australia - as head chef at Bondi's Hugo's - before taking his career on the road, including a stint at a private club in London's Mayfair and at a boutique resort on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Davenport says he sees ''different people in different seasons''. July for Australians, for example, August for the French and Italians, January for the Russian Christmas revellers and Chinese New Year for guests from Singapore and Hong Kong. Then there is the local community, which includes a considerable French expat population of about 25,000.
Prahran-based architect Charlie Salter designed the stunning Metis restaurant in Kerobokan, next to Seminyak, with Denpasar-based, Australian-educated Shinta Siregar from Nexus Studio. He has another theory: ''Bali is like the Gold Coast for people with money in Perth. It's just a three-hour flight, so plenty of Aussies own properties there. Consequently, you'll see the restaurants full of an older crowd, who are after an elegant, complete dining experience. They're the kind of people you'll see at Sarong.''
Also in Kerobokan, Sarong is the opulent restaurant-cum-lounge from Will Meyrick, former chef at Sydney's Jimmy Liks and Longrain. It's a bit like Donovan's sexier, hot-blooded sister, with plush furniture, juxtapositions of style and plenty of room for lounging.

Metis is fine dining as envisioned by Nicolas ''Doudou'' Tourneville and Said Alem, two men known for another popular place, Warisan. The downstairs section of the restaurant is arranged in a U shape. Tuck into sashimi-style scallops, or stuffed zucchini flowers, as you look out over lily-filled ponds, which are spotlit at night. Metis mixes food, shopping and design with boutiques and galleries through the complex, a concept Warisan pioneered.
But it is catering that Salter says the Metis guys have really tapped into. There is big business to be had in Bali, with customers coming from Jakarta, China, India and elsewhere. From wedding receptions and cocktail parties to anniversaries or corporate events, people are looking for places outside of big hotels to host large functions. This could mean somewhere such as Metis but also at the large walled villas popping up all over the island.
Regular visitors to Bali have their favourites, depending on where they stay, and new ones are constantly appearing. La Lucciola, the thatched-roof grand dame on Seminyak beach, remains a romantic and sentimental favourite, the kind of place at which one might pop the question.
Gado Gado, also by the water, is a beautiful spot to tuck into a nest of angel-hair pasta with chilli crab or a smoked-salmon sandwich with hand-cut coleslaw for lunch. The venue's huge deck looks out on swimmers and men selling kites and it appeals to couples and families alike. A large tree grows up through the deck, its long, low arm reaching down over the waiters' station, meaning the serving staff have to limbo to get to their equipment; there's also a bar that beckons for a sunset cocktail.
Sarong is a gorgeous night out, welcoming and serving Asian street food that's had a million-dollar makeover. Try the twice-cooked pork belly with mandarin slices on the side, the salt-and-pepper squid or the naan stuffed with lamb and yoghurt.
Ku De Ta has a reputation as the place where Bali goes to party. An elegantly sprawling design means serious diners remain undisturbed by the drinkers on the rooftop beer garden.
What drives chefs such as Davenport to go to so much trouble to create dishes of a standard that appeals to the Miele Guide?
''We're professionals,'' he says. ''We're going to give the best we've got. I'm employed to do a good job. It's my career, my legacy and reputation. We want to be known as a food destination. Chefs don't want to just work at beach bars.''

Bebek betutu or babi guling? Best of Balinese is worth the hunt

MANY of Bali's hippest restaurants concentrate on Mediterranean cuisine or fusion styles - indigenous Balinese cooking is rarely the focus. Shinta Siregar, who helped design Metis in Kerobokan, says this might be because the Asian clientele snaps up local chefs for their private villas. ''This food is often superb and you wouldn't be able to find it in any restaurant,'' she says. Siregar's own live-in Javanese cook is so popular she caters for the architect's friends and colleagues. At lunchtime she heads off on her motorbike to deliver food.
Siregar loves Padang food of West Sumatra and cites as favourites La Pau at Sanur, where ''mum does the cooking, great beef rendang'', and Warung Batavia in Seminyak.
Phil Davenport enjoys eating at Bambuku in Kuta where ''they make stuff for lunch and, once it's gone, it's gone''. He says Jimbaran Bay, home of seafood grilled with Balinese sauces, is worth a sundown visit - Menega Cafe is a favourite.
Maya's Kath Townsend likes Ubud's healthy eating options - Bali Buddha and Naughty Nuri's. She says these are popular with ''the EPLs'' coming to Ubud (EPL refers to visitors inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert's book Eat, Pray, Love). She likes to eat nasi champur, Indonesian mixed rice, and the distinctive Balinese Bumbu spice mix - ''highly medicinal''.
A member of the Slow Food movement and its founder in Ubud, Townsend loves slow-roasted Balinese duck, bebek betutu. ''It's marinated in a special spice mix, using the lean ducks from the rice paddies, wrapped in banana leaves, then wrapped in coconut husks and baked in the ground. You need to order a day in advance.''
Babi guling is Bali's famous roast pig. Townsend's diners enjoy a version ordered in from a local roaster. Ubud is also home to Ibu Oka, the place where Anthony Bourdain had what he called ''the best pig ever''.

Expensive drop

WINE prices remain a sticking point everywhere you go in Bali - in the range of $75 for a bottle of Peter Lehmann shiraz at Metis.
While Bali is Hindu, Indonesia is a Muslim country, so the sale of alcohol, and the taxing of it, remains tricky. Those in the know suggest trying Chilean drops or something from California as alternatives. The island is overpopulated with ''mixologists'', so cocktails are plentiful and inexpensive.
If beer is more your thing, it's available at many convenience stores. The original local tipples, Bali Hai and Bintang, are (thankfully) now up against newcomer Storm Brewing, a pale ale full of hoppy goodness, similar to Fat Yak. Many places also sell Carlsberg, San Miguel and Heineken.

Enchanting Colors by Trio Women Painters

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa is proud to present three exceptional women painters: Ardha P. Koto, Tjok Mas Astiti and Agnes Yulinawati. During the month of December 2011 they will exhibit their latest works titled “Enchanting Colors by Trio Women Painters”.

Ardha Prihandono Koto has exhibited her works widely in Indonesia and overseas since 1974. She likes to experiment and express her thoughts in many creative ways. Ardha, a former lecturer of the Art & Design Faculty in Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) is known for live painting performance and her poetic titles. She is active in teaching and consulting young artists and women artists.

Tjokorda Istri Mas Astiti is originally from Payangan, Gianyar and currently teaches at the Institute of Art Denpasar. Tjok Mas has been painting and participating in exhibitions since 1965 in Denpasar, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Jakarta, Germany, London and Australia. In her work Tjok Mas focuses on the lives and feeling of women, especially Balinese woman with particular cares and responsibilities, not only for her children, but also in other roles of life, such as dancing, teaching and as a wife and mother.

Agnes Yulinawati gained insight into the flourishing Japanese art world in 1980-1981 as an overseas technical trainee before graduating from Udayana University in 1983. Her first painting exhibition was in 1977 “Exhibition of Young Indonesia Painters” at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. Since then Agnes has exhibited her works in various cities of Indonesia and Japan. As Agnes matured as an artist, her landscapes metamorphosed from painstakingly accurate renditions of scenes to a more evocative, spiritual expression of landscapes.

Jeweled Batik Exhibition

Annemarie Kipar

The Gallery Boutique of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa, during the month of August will feature a unique collection of jeweled batik tapestries designed by Annemarie Kipar.

German-born Annemarie Kipar decorates her beautiful batik selection with beads,sequins and stones piece, creating beautiful glittering tapestries. Annemarie found Indonesian batiks to be magical in their intricate design with motifs ranging from imaginative to naif; mystical to primitive.

Each piece of art takes three to four months to complete. Over the years Annemarie's tapestries have become collector's items throughout the world and adorn the homes of celebrities. Apart of the proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to Smile Foundation Bali and Metropolis in Tirta Gangga, Karangasem, Bali.

New Fitness Center & Yoga Pavilion at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa

Solo Painting Exhibition by Wayan Pendet

Traditional Life of Bali that is the theme of the Solo Painting Exhibition by Wayan Pendet, held at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa Lobby from the 1st July to 31st July 2011.

Wayan Pendet, born in 1939 in Peliatan ubud. He graduated from junior high school in Ubud in 1956 and then studied painting techniques under Anak Agung Raka Turas from 1956 - 1959.

Apart from painting, Wayan was also parcitipated in wood carving and soft stone sketch and relief projects. Together with his mentor, Anak Agung Raka Turas he was involved in the creation of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Indonesia Miniature park) Jakarta in 1975. He was also participated in creating two monuments at museum Purna Bhakti Pertiwi in Jakarta in 1990.

Wayan Pendet uses acrylic, water color on paper and canvas for his paintings. In his daily life Wayan is also a farmer and it is from here he has acquired inspiration for many of his paintings. His charming artworks reflect much of the traditional Balinese way of life, dances, temple ceremonies and the colorful traditional market.

United Colour of Art - Ubud Artists Painting Exhibition

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa is featuring a painting exhibition by Ubud artists, entitled “United Colour of Art” during the month of June. The paintings being exhibited will include traditional and classic subjects such as a beautiful Oleg Tambulilingan Dancer, Kecak, Baris, Pendet; and other works in a more modern style.

All artists were born and raised in Ubud, the center of classical Balinese art. Talented from birth, all were introduced to art at very young. They explore the island’s rich cultural heritage a

nd express it in their creative paintings. All are actively exhibiting their works in various places Bali and overseas.

The most senior painter is I Dewa Putu Mokoh, 75 years old. He was a student of I Gusti Ketut Kobot, whose work was influenced by Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978). In the 1970’s Mokoh found his own style of painting which is renowned for its simplicity, detail and humor.

Wayan Eka Partama is the youngest of the painters in this exhibition. Nevertheless he is a prolific artist and has already participated in 23 exhibitions in Bali and Jakarta and was one of the best graduates of ISI Denpasar (Art Institute of Indonesia in Denpasar) in 2008.

These outstanding works of acrylic on canvas can be viewed during this exhibition at the Lobby of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa during the month of June.

Welcome to Paradise, A Solo Painting Exhibition by I Ketut Teler

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa will feature a solo painting exhibition by I Ketut Teler, titled “Welcome to Paradise” from January 8 - February 8, 2011.

Teler will display 22 of his unique artworks themed “Welcome to Paradise”, which are the testimonies to the various phenomena of costumes, culture, tradition & religions that occurred in Bali. The paintings show various forms of acculturation and cultural adaptation that grow harmoniously in Bali.

Born in 1971 in the village of Bangli, Bali, Teler graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts Indonesia in Denpasar. Since 1992 he has been active in group exhibitions in a number of galleries and museums in Bali, Yogyakarta and Jakarta. In 1995 he participated in The Artist Residence in Boston, USA. In the same year he was awarded the First Prize Kamasra by the ISI in Denpasar.

Since 2002, Teler has been interested in icons and Buddhism which is often reflected in his works. He pursues the philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism, and the rituals of Vajrayana. “Through the middle way, I want to search and find the essence of dualism, which is able to bring about an attitude of tolerance and harmony in life. The middle way it also inspires a lot of my works,” he said.

Teler’s exquisite works can be viewed during this exhibition at the Lobby of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa from January 8 - February 8, 2011.

Palebon Agung in Ubud

A Palebon Agung, the cremation ceremony of Ida Dwa Agung Peliatan IX was held on November 2, 2010 in the vicinity of Ubud. The procession started around 1 p.m. with a mass of local community carried out 8.5-meter-high white bull with golden horns, a 6-meter-high dragon bridge (nagabanda), and a 25-meter-high 11-tier cremation tower (bade). The body of the royal Ida Dwa Agung Peliatan IX was placed in this tower and transported to the Pura Dalem from Peliatan Palace.

Materials Exploration, Solo Painting Exhibition by Dadik Isbandono

Dadik Isbandono displays eleven (11) of his unique paintings at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa. In this exhibition he roamed realism using different materials, such as: coffee, tea, pencil colour and acrylic on canvas.

Dadik shared that the technique he uses for painting with tea is similar with painting with water-colour. We can see the water marks from the brush. While painting with coffee will create an end result a rough surface. It’s interesting to know that the quality and way to handle these paintings are the same as painting using other materials.

Born in 1969 in Kediri - East Java, Dadik Isbandono studied fine art painting in IKIP Malang – East Java and was graduated in 1992. In 1998 Dadik moved to Bali and do a lot of human portrait paintings. He captures natural human expression in daily life in most of his works.

Dadik’s beautiful works can be viewed during this exhibition at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa from October 6 to November 15, 2010.

Maya Ubud Plant-a-Tree Campaign

Maya Ubud is supporting a local non-profit conservation organisation, Friends of National Parks Foundation (FNPF), to restore forest cover on the Bali adjacent island of Nusa Penida from only 5% to 30%.

Trees combat global warming by extracting CO2 from the atmosphere. Trees reduce soil erosion and bring higher rainfall. Trees provide habitat for wildlife.

Maya Ubud invites guests to plant-a-tree and restore 1 hectare of a 100 hectare reforestation project. A plaque listing all Maya Ubud donors will be placed on the land. Donors will receive the FNPF annual newsletter describing the progress of the reforestation project. $20 donation will cover the cost of growing 4 saplings from seeds in the FNPF nursery, planting on the land, and then 3 years of care (mulch & water)

FNPF is a local non-profit conservation organisation that combines Wildlife Protection, Habitat Restoration and Community Wellbeing (www.fnpf.org). FNPF has converted Nusa Penida into a unique “island bird sanctuary”. Endangered Indonesian bird species are released onto the island to build up their numbers free from the threat of poachers. FNPF runs day trips from Ubud to Nusa Penida to visit the conservation project. If interested, please contact our Resort Guide at extension 1901. Orphanage Visitation

On Thursday the 28th of September, Maya Ubud began visitation to several homes of orphan in Bali. The first visit was the Balinese orphanage known as Seeds of Hope, located in Dalung and founded by Tommy and his wife Sandra. This orphanage provides care to 67 children from the age of 10 months up to 18 years. Benih Harapan was the second orphanage visited in the same day.

In the following days, Saturday the 2nd of October, Maya Ubud visited more orphanages, Darma Jati a privately run Balinese orphanage for more than 200 children and Tat Wam Asi an orphanage for 45 girls. Yayasan Senyum, a non profit, independent organization working to bring health care to people with craniofacial disabilities was visited as well during the day.

During this visitation, some donation of useable stuff has been handed to them by Maya Ubud management. Further donation will be given to the other organization that provided care to orphans and poor and homeless children.

Temple Ceremony at Maya Ubud

The Balinese temple ceremony called Piodalan was held on September 8, 2010 at Maya Ubud's temple. Hotel staffs and management presented banten and gebogan as an offering to the Hindu deities. The ceremony has been also filled with the hotel guests who are interested in attending the ceremony. Balinese Mask Dance and Shadow Puppet were performed followed by the procession with Ida Pedanda Gede Jelantik Giri, Balinese high priest.

Look Back, Reflect on Nature; Water Colour Painting Exhibition

Together with his mentor, Anak Agung Raka Turas he was involved in the creation of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Indonesia Miniature Park) Jakarta in 1975. He was also participated in creating two monuments at Museum Purna Bhakti Peritwi in Jakarta in 1990.

Pendet uses acrylic water colour on paper and canvas for his paintings. In his daily life Pendet is also a farmer and it is from here he has acquired inspiration for many of his paintings. His charming artworks reflect much of the traditional balinese way of life, dances, temple ceremonies and the colorful traditional markets.

Wayan pendet displays eighteen (18) of his unique works of art at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa consisting mainly of traditional balinese style paintings inspired by colourful traditional life of Bali.

Tree Planting Program of Sanur Independent School

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa has been recently visited by 14 students and a teacher of Sanur Independent School. The purpose of this visit was to participate in Maya Ubud program to support the environment’s preservation and protection, tree planting.

A tree of mango was voted by the students to be planted in the resort’s ground. A plaque installed with the name and special message engraved on it. Fund donated by Sanur Independent School will be passed on to FNPF (Friends of National Parks Foundation, non profit organization working to preserve Indonesia’s wildlife and its habitat for her people and for the world).

The result of the annual vote by readers of Condé Nast Traveler came as a surprise to the people of Ubud as Ubud tops other cities in Asia with a score of 82.5 out of the perfect score of 100. Nonetheless, a celebration was organized on Saturday 30 January 2010 at the Ubud Palace to mark the hand-over of the Award plaque to the representatives of the 8000 inhabitants of Bali’s mountainous destination.

Each year, readers of travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler honor cities of their preference in a vote with 6 (six) criteria namely Atmosphere/Ambience, Culture/Site, Friendliness, Lodging, Restaurant and Shopping. In the previous year’s voting, in 2008, Bangkok won the best city in Asia vote, followed by Chiang Mai and Hong Kong in second and third place respectively. Ubud has never made it to the list until this year, and it came straight to the top, beating other cities with the highest score for Friendliness criteria.

“Indeed it is a pleasant surprise and on behalf of the people of Ubud, I wish to convey our gratitude to visitors of Ubud who had voted,” expressed Tjokorda Putra Sukawati, a well-respected descendant in the lineage of Ubud Palace.

In a letter, read by Aloysius Purwa of Bali Tourism Board, to the invitees that evening, Condé Nast Traveler’s vice president and publisher, Chris Mitchell thanks the people of Ubud for extending their gracious hospitality to readers and congratulates Ubud on this exceptional achievement.

Mitchell continues to state that travel has never mattered more than it does right now. It is a multi-trillion-dollar industry that fuels the world economy through so many different channels. It has the power to improve the lives of people in impoverished or endangered communities. It connects people to the larger world as no other experience can. And in this time of global uncertainty, as people reshuffle and fine-tune their priorities, travel is the consumable that enriches.

Receiving the prestigious vote, the people of Ubud organized a meeting on 23 January 2010 to address ways and means to preserve their petite village, with the aim to continue giving visitors an enjoyable experience. Also a big clean-up was organized on 29 January 2010 which brought smiling people with brooms and dustpans to dot the streets of Ubud all morning.

An outing in this December was held by Maya Ubud Resort & Spa for all its staffs at Bali Safari & Marine Park - a home to hundreds fascinating animals around the world.

The journey began by jumping in to the safari tram and riding through roaming Sumatran tigers, elephants in the jungle of Sumatra, hippos, cheetahs, leopards and many other wild animals; and then followed by watching beautifully themed exhibits by adorable elephants and monkeys.

Maya ubud Resort & Spa has been a regular donor to the Bali Bird Sanctuary for the past two years. All through a simple but great idea.

Guests of the resort are invited to plant a tree in the beautiful hotel grounds. For the cost of less than Rp. 195,000 (USD 20), a tree of the guest's choice is planted and a plaque installed with their name and special message engraved on it. Funds raised are then passed on to FNPF (Friends of National Parks Foundation is a local non-profit organisation working to preserve Indonesia’s wildlife and its habitat for her people and for the world). A gift that gives twice!

Since its inception the program has been resulted in millions if rupiahs to help plant trees as part of the Bali Bird Sanctuary reforestation program. This support means that we can increase the habitat for the birds who make their home in Nusa Penida (An island southeast of Bali island of Indonesia).

As a part of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Maya Ubud Resort & Spa was held an Indonesian literature session with NH Dini, Laksmi Pamuntjak, Dede Oetomo, and Nurhady Sirimonok on Saturday, October 10, 2009.

NH Dini was born in 1936 in Semarang, Central Java. She is one of the few Indonesian authors who writes about social, cultural, and political injustices suffered by the country’s women. She has penned more than 20 books, and has been awarded the SEA Write Award and Best Literary Award from Ministry of National Education.

Laksmi Pamuntjak. Aside from writing the award-winning Jakarta Good Food Guide Series, she is also the author of two poetry collection, Ellipsis and The Anagram; a treatise on violence and mythology entitled Perang, Langit, dan Dua Perempuan (War, Heaven, and Two Women), and a collection of short stories, The Diary of R.S: Musings on Art.

Dede Oetomo co-founded Lambda Indonesia, Indonesia’s first gay organization in 1982, and Gaya Nusantara, the longest-running Indonesian gay organization in 1987. He is now undertaking research, training and mentoring Indonesian LGBTIQ activities and others concerned with studying sexuality critically.

Nurhady Sirimorok writes literary, history, and cultural critiques, short histories, and has translated several books on history and culture of South Sulawesi. He is currently doing his own research on history of social movement in the province, as a part a bigger wave of rewriting Indonesian history.

In this occasion a variety of Indonesia’s finest dishes were served as well. Beaded Antique Batik Exhibition

The Gallery Boutique of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa will feature a unique collection of jewelled batik tapestries designed by Annemarie Kipar from August 17 – September 15, 2009.

German-born Annemarie Kipar decorates her beautiful batik selection with beads, sequins and stones piece by piece, creating beautifully glittering tapestries. Annemarie studied Renaissance Art at Berkeley, found Indonesian batiks to be magical in their intricate design with motifs ranging from imaginative to naïf; mystical to primitive.

Apart from batik, the creative works of Annemarie also include carefully selected fabrics from different parts of the world which she enhances with rich and colorful beads and stones. Each piece of art takes three to four months to complete.

Resort Temple Ceremony

The once every 210 days Piodalan ceremony was held recently on July 15, 2009 at Maya Ubud temple. The ceremony was conducted by Ida Pendanda (Balinese high priest) and attended by all staff of Maya Ubud as well as the guest in house who also interested to see the procession of the ceremony.

The ceremony was accompanied by the sound of gamelan – Balinese traditional instruments and followed by the presentation of offerings.

With 17 teenagers at the orphanage, we conduct Hotel Career Day. Four of us from the hotel shared our experience how do we start our career in the hotel.

The most important points are to encourage them to work hard, to have positive attitude, always find opportunities and never give up.

Puppet Tales - A Solo Painting Exhibition by NA Arnawa

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa will feature a solo painting exhibition by NA Arnawa, titled “Puppet Tales” from July 17 – August 15, 2009.

Arnawa will display thirty (30) of his unique art works at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa consisting mainly of puppet figures inspired by stories on Ramayana and Mahabarata epics.

Born in Denpasar, Bali, in 1950, Arnawa graduated from Fine Art and Design in Udayana University, Denpasar. Arnawa’s earlier work concentrated on traditional Balinese sceneries captured in colourful oils and acrylics. An increasing interest in the ancient Hindu epic tales of the Ramayana and Mahabarata inspired him to change the focus of his art in the late of 1985.

Arnawa uses mixed media including antique Bali fabric elements such as keling, cepuk, geringsing and poleng as the background. Oil and Acrylic are also used on his paintings, however he consistently introduce Balinese cloth designs as the backdrop if his puppet figures. Arnawa believes he has learnt many lessons of life from the ancient epics and this is interpreted through his work.

Arnawa’s beautiful works on acrylic and mixed media can be viewed during this exhibition at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa from July 17 to August 15, 2009.

As Balinese use their own calendar system, their new year was celebrated on March 26 this year. The Balinese open their new year in silence which is called Nyepi day (the day of silence). On Nyepi day, there are no normal daily activities conducted. Every street is so quite. People stay at their homes with minimum light and noise.

A day before Nyepi day, Balinese perform the ogoh-ogoh parade all over Bali. Ogoh-ogoh is a representative of evil spirit made of the materials such as bamboo and paper that have to get rid from human lives. For the reason of the incoming general election and the safety, the Ogoh-ogoh parade was not allowed this year. However, several villages were participated in the Culture and Art Festival held in Kuta area. The festival featured the competition of ogoh-ogoh as well as traditional music and dances.

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa was celebrating its 8th year anniversary on March 28, 2009.

Attended by all employees and management, the anniversary was celebrated with a special luncheon that served various Balinese foods and desserts to enjoy in the staff cafetaria.

To commemorate the resort’s anniversary, “My Star of the Year” was honored to the best employees at the resort during the last one year. This year, the management has decided to award the “My Star of the Year” for the “front of the house” category to Yuda Wijaya, and for the “Back of the House” category to I Made Sutapa and I Gede Muliadi. Special prizes and certificates were also awarded to them as well.

Meet Koyano Tetsuro; a Balinese Dancer

Yes, he is a Japanese, but he is famous as a Balinese Dancer in Japan. Popular as Mask Dance (Tari Topeng) performer, Koyano spends 3 - 4 months of his time in Bali in a year, the rest will be arranging Balinese Dance & Music performances, not only in Japan but also to the US.

While he is in Bali, he presents dance in temple festivals, this is a form of an offering to God called "ngayah".

He dedicates his life to Balinese Dance and aims to support old Balinese Dancers based in Bali.

The Smile Shop or in Indonesian language called Toko Senyum belongs to Yayasan Senyum (The Smile Foundation) http://www.senyumbali.org/. Founded by Mary Northmore, this foundation have mission to reduce the suffering currently associated with craniofacial abnormalities and to improve quality of life by facilitating the delivery of health care to people with craniofacial disabilities in Bali and other Indonesian islands in partnership with local and international health care professionals.

They have done surgeries mostly in Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar, patients who present with serious conditions that need a higher level of treatment than is currently available locally are sent to the Australian Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide, for surgery by Professor David David.

Maya Ubud has been participating in contributing good as news stuffs that they can sell in the shop.

Widya Guna Bedulu, Orphan House

Last Saturday, January 24, 2009, we had an opportunity to visit Yayasan Widya Guna, an Orphan House located in Bedulu village, about 15 minutes from Maya Ubud. The purpose of this visit was to deliver unused stuffs from the hotel they can still use. Our regular group named Gita International Yoga from Australia was also handed bags of clothes and dolls to give to the children.

Yayasan Widya Guna - started in 2004 by Gill Rijnenberg & Ketut Sadia, wth their primary goal is to give the children of Bali the opportunity to obtain an education and to break the cycle of poverty. There are total of 86 children funded their education through Yayasan Widya Guna, 19 of them are orphans and the rest are poor children. The children age range between 3 to 17 years old.

Each child has respective foster parent to fund their education fee. Pak Ketut of Widya Guna expects to get the contract of fostering at least until the children pass their high school. Each child has their bank account where their parent transfer the fund directly to them. Each child has a "buku kas" where they record all their expenses to be read by their foster parents. They even have email address and they are communicating to their foster parents atleast once a week updating their development.

Everyday they get English Class and Dance Class. The English class is conducted by some volunteers. The volunteers from overseas will be staying in guest house available at the yayasan.

It began with Bali rhythm & dance with Ubud's kecak troupe & drums at our full moon amphitheatre. Cocktails & tapas are served during the ballet. Following by a fabulous served five course dinner, superbly crafted by the Maya chefs. A sumptuous patisserie and flamed coffee bar is set for the guests to crown their dinner. Komang and his melodic guitar also presented listening pleasure during dinner and guided us musically towards 2009 and listen to Indonesian "Ever Greens" presented by "orkes" to welcome the New Year 2009.

One early morning I came to the Spa area. I found this fresh plantation at the River Cafe, the plantation was as fresh as the morning.

Lifting up my spirit.

It was Life Wheat Grass available for Wheat Grass Juice served as one of River Cafe healthy drink menu.

Wulan, the lady who takes care of the garden and plantation explained that it takes 8 days to grow the wheat grass until it is ready to harvest. The wheat seeds need to soak for 1 day, and then strain and leave it for another day. The next stage is to spread the seeds on a container with healthy soil and black sand as the base. Water the seed every day with fresh water and then on the 6th day, it is ready to harvest.

Once the guest asks for the juice, Dewa Antara, or one of the River Cafe's team will cut the grass on the spot and juice it with special juicer.

Temple Ceremony at Maya Ubud

Once every 6 months of Balinese Calendar (210 days) the resort hold a temple ceremony or Piodalan. The purpose of the ceremony is to purify, protect and bless the area and the people. The latest Piodalan was held in the evening of 17 December 2008. The ceremony conducted by Ida Pendanda (Balinese high priest) commenced with purification ceremony then continued with the piodalan and prayer. All staff members of the resort came along and to celebrate it.

The ladies wore balinese kebaya while the gentlemen wore white shirt with udeng (mind binder), saput and kamben. They sat down inside and infront of temple waiting for the praying moment.

Before hand, all staffs helped by community from Banjar Ambengan did preparation for the ceremony. Each person or group also prepare their own offering to be presented to the God. As you can see on the picture above, the offerings are so beautifully made with creations, everybody wanted to present the best to the God.

World Asia Publishing the organizer of Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards garnered 139 nominees from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand for HAPA Regional Series. During a gala event in Kuala Lumpur HAPA awarded the Top Ten Best South East Asia.

Art of life, a Batik Exhibition at Maya Ubud

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa will feature Batik Exhibition titled “Art for Life” by Tjok Agung Kusumayuda Pemayun and W Gallery from December 20, 2008 – January 15, 2009.

The unique process of Batik making is through dyeing methods in which design is drawn or stamped on a piece of cloth with melted wax. When the wax sets it acts as a dye-resist, so that the waxed parts of the cloth remain unaffected by the dyes. The wax is then removed, usually by boiling the cloth, and the process is repeated over and over again until the desired pattern is achieved. There are two main processes to apply the wax: by hand, using a special tool for drawing with melted wax called a canting and with a copper stamp, called a cap. In some cases both techniques are used on the same cloth to obtain the desired pattern. Traditionally the canting is used by women and men use the cap.

Natural Dyed Batik is always the passion for Tjok Agung . He has been involved with Bali traditional textile conservation work with with Yayasan Pecinta Budaya Bebali (Bebali Traditional Textile Conservation Foundation). He is also developing programs in his village of Pejeng to build the local economy and community in ways that are sustainable and preserve the natural dyed batik tradition. Alongside to his effort in growing local economy among village people, together with W Gallery Ubud, Tjok Agung contributes 10% from sales of his batik artwork during the exhibition and at W Gallery for environment programs such include reforestation, organic agriculture, education and other community projects that being done by Friends of National Parks Foundation (www.fnpf.org).

On my walk through the riverside garden, I met this gentleman called Arif. He is one of Maya Ubud Leisure Centre Team. He greeted me with warm smile, and said good afternoon. Then we had a chat

Me : What are you doing here Arif?

Arif : I am expecting a group of people that has a meeting program at Maya Ubud. They will be here very soon.

Me : What do you bring in that basket?

Arif : This is special blended tonic drink to be given to the group as the walk through the garden. It is part of their retreat program.

Me : Is that a kind of Jamu?

Arif : Yes, it is similar to Jamu, but we have our own blending.

Me : What are the group doing at Maya Ubud?

Arif : They have a retreat meeting program for 3 days.

A journey to Riverside Garden

Few weeks ago I had a chance to walk through the Riverside Garden of the resort . The garden spread along between the resort villas and Petanu river. The garden has 700meters pathway that will guide you to see different variation of tropical plantations available in the garden. Fruit trees, flowers, herbs, vegetables can be lively viewed during the walk. More than 200 trees planted there a part from the orginal big trees that have been exist long time before the resort was built.

In the garden, the resort provides 2 bales (gazebo) for those who wish to meditate or practicing yoga in the natural setting or just to read a book. Picnic Lunch Menu also available for those who want to dine in the nature.

The pathway ended at the surprisingly Spa area, where you could find resort's River Cafe, Spa Pool and Spa at Maya.

If you are on lesurely speed, it will take about 30minutes to browse the area.

On your visit to Maya Ubud don't missed this eco-walk, it's very refreshing. Especially if you conclude it with spa pampering.

One the writers in this year festival was Andrea Hirata, the author of Laskar Pelangi. Quoted as Indonesia's most powerfull book, this 526 pages book firstly published in 2005 has been inspiring so many people in Indonesia.

2008 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival

I and Ayu were on the gala opening of 2008 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival that took place at Saren Place, Ubud, Bali on October 15, 2008. This year is the 5th Festival that has been performed. The Festival comprises 4 days and the theme of this year is Tri Hita Karana which is the Balinese concept of balancing Man, Nature, and God.

This festival has been attended by about 100 writers with other participants such as journalist, academics, readers and sponsors. Maya Ubud is one of the main sponsors of this event.

The opening was started by the first speech from Tjokorda Gde Putra Sukawati from Ubud Royal Family, following by the words from Festival Director of Janet de Neefe, the Bali governor of Made Mangku Pastika, and the Ubud Royal Family’s member of Tjokorda Raka Kerthayasa. In the end, the traditional Balinese dance closed the opening gala.

Resort's Spiritual Person became High Balinese Priest

Ida Bagus Raka, the man who has been conducted daily prayer and offering ritual at Maya Ubud was inaugurated as Balinese High Priest or Pendanda. The ceremony called Mediksa held on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at his residence Griya Anyar in Banjar Ambengan, Peliatan Ubud, within walking distance from the hotel.

Pedanda, the brahmana high priest of Bali, is a special person who have ability to perform and oversee a religious ceremony, serves as the connection between God and mortal. The pedanda is also the source of holy water for ceremonies and declaim as holiest prayer.

Prior his new role as Pendanda, during the past seven (7) years on he was conducting daily offering presentation at the resort first thing in the morning, this include the temple and shrines that are available at Maya Ubud. Ida Bagus Raka presented the offering to resort’s temple and all seven (7) shrines spread out along the resort sacred areas, he got the area blessed before the other staffs starting their work. He brings a bunch of flower offering with incense lit and holy water, the smell the incenses awaken the resort and refresh the area as he sprinkles the holy water.

Now he is expanding larger role in the village society and serves the village community to perform Balinese ceremonies held in the area as a high priest. His role at Maya Ubud spiritual person is now delivered to his children, who will continue to present the flower offering to start the morning.

New Lounge of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa

As more and more needs emerge from the guests to stay longer in Maya Ubud Resort & Spa after their check-outs, Maya Ubud presents a newly created lounge that offers guests a comfortable air-conditioned area over looking the resort gardens and rice terraces and an outdoor seating area around a fountain area in which cozy enough to loosen up prior to the departure.

Whilst guests are staying, guests may enjoy reading some books, magazines, and newspaper that intently serve for Maya Ubud guests, as well as hearing music, or even playing games.

Tea, coffee, and cookies will be served in any convenience time. In the afternoon at 4 pm to 5 pm a special tea with assorted Balinese sweets will be also served as well. Feeling need more cuisine, in–room dining menu & bar service is available on request. Furthermore for more ease the bathroom facilities is also available which includes the changing area, showers, hairdryers, and fresh towel.

Maya Ubud is also aware the occasion of more late departure, so it makes the lounge available as late as possible until at 11 pm (open from 12 pm – check out time). All the above lounge services will be available for only US$ 15.00 net per person until 6.00 pm, while the departures after 6.00 pm, the additional charge of US $10 net per person will be applied.

Independent, Galungan, and Kuningan days in Bali

Galungan and Kuningan is one of the biggest days for the Balinese whose religion is Hinduism. Galungan is the day of the Dharma (Goodness) is winning over the Adharma (Badness). The days between Galungan and Kuningan are the celebration days filled with the heart of gratitude to Ida Sanghyang Widhi (highest divinity) for the grace that has been given to the human being to conquer the Adharma. Likewise, Kuningan is a symbol of prosperity. In this day, offering has been presented with the heart of gratitude to Ida Sanghyang Widhi for all kindness and love in providing human all natural resources. Penjor (long bamboo pole) is a symbol of this in where all natural resources are attached such as rice, corn, coconut, etc.

In this year, Galungan day fell in the day that was close to the Indonesian Independent day (Galungan and Kuningan lied on August 20 and August 30 whereas independent day was on 17 August). As we may see in the following pictures – taken from my cell phone during my way to Maya Ubud Resort & Spa – the decoration of Indonesian flag (red and white) and Penjor along the street.

Charity program "Yayasan Sosial Putra Putri Bangsa"

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa regularly plays a part for donation and participation in the charity program that has been established by “Yayasan Sosial Putra Putri Bangsa”.

“Yayasan Sosial Putra Putri Bangsa” is a non-profit organization which goals are to bring positive changes to the life of children in Bali, particularly for them in Northern Bali. Why is the Northern Bali ? Most of the tourism businesses are invested and fast growing only in the South of Bali, then the positive impacts mostly enjoyed by the Southern Balinese. Typically, the Northern Balinese still live in and under poverty line. As a consequence, Northern Bali is not well developed as the Southern Bali.

To make realize these goals, “Yayasan Sosial Putra Putri Bangsa” has established many events to gather contributions from the donators. As the charity dinner in 2007 was held at SIR (Selected Indonesian Restaurant) in Holland where the auction of the package of accommodation, tour, antique handicrafts, etc was performed. All benefit from this event would be planned to finance the construction of orphanage house in Jembrana, Bali.

The below pictures were taken from the last project report of “Yayasan Sosial Putra Putri Bangsa” that has been reported to Maya Ubud.

The project takes place in the high school (grades 7 - 9) of SMP PGRI Seraya Timur, Karangasem.

Seraya Timur is the Karangasem regency lies in the North East Cost of Bali Island. It’s located in hill of Amed, which is quite isolated and very dried out area. Direct public transports to the city of Karangasem are not available.

SMP PGRI Seraya Timur, Karangasem is the only high school available in Seraya Timur which is only additional class of the high school (SMP PGRI) in the city of Karangasem. The education is held in the afternoon as in the morning the teachers are also teaching in the high school (SMP PGRI) of the city of Karangasem.

The first physical condition was half finished building, no toilet facility, and the teacher room looked more like storage than the office is, as well as the desks and chairs for students were given with simple service by the high school (SMP PGRI) in the city of Karangasem from their broken stocks. Moreover, the book resource is very limited which is three text books for one class, with no other supporting facilities such as dictionary, reading books, map, etc.

Another issue is that the number of students in each class has been reduced almost 30% in each year. This caused by the several financial problems in which the education fee is no longer affordable for the parents who are mostly farmers and fishermen that depends much on the good whether.

Based on these needs, the project was consisting of finishing school building, building teacher office, building toilet, providing school facilities, and also includes granting scholarship.

Royal Family Cremation Ceremony

People lives in Ubud and visitors were recently witnessed the royal cremation ceremony took place on July 15, 2008 for Members for Ubud Royal Family.

The cremation was held for the bodies of two prominent of elders of the Ubud Royal Family, Tjokorda Gde Agung Suyasa and Tjokorda Gede Raka. The effigy of Desak Raka whose body was cremated in a similar ceremony in December 2007 soon after she passed away, will also give a full cremation ceremony. On the same day, 68 other people from villages in Ubud also received full cremation ceremonies.

I was very lucky to be able to witness this spectacular moment which rarely held in Bali, the previous one was in 1979. Here are few pictures I took during the cremation day. There were two big bulls statue and two cremation towers or Bade, one of the tower has 28 meters height.

Tree Planting

Collaborate with FNPF (Friends of National Parks Foundation – non profit organization working to preserve Indonesia’s wildlife and its habitat for her people and for the world), Maya Ubud Resort & Spa initiates a program to support the environment’s preservation and protection.

This program welcomes all Maya Ubud guests to take part by planting tree(s) along the resort’s riverside nature walk. Variety of threes are available from the resort’s nursery such as mango, coconut, clove, guava, jackfruit, breadfruit, mangos teen, water apple, coffee, etc. After pick the tree(s)’ preference, guests may also choose the spot of tree(s) will be planted. Moreover, this tree(s) will be tagged with the name, date of planting, and other chosen words guest may consider.

Mr & Mrs. Wolfgang Baermann from Germany have participated in this program. They have tried to grow tropical tress they had from Bali back in their country but had no success. Then they decided to have their own mango tree in Maya Ubud, and will look forward to seeing how it will develop on future visits.

A little fee is charged with the proceeds being donated to FNPF. Guests’ donation will help them to pursue the reforestation of the islands in Indonesia. They will plant about 3 seedlings for each of the contribution.

In my personal observation, being concern of global warming, this program becomes one of my favorites in Maya Ubud. I hope this tree planting may help offsetting the carbon emissions and keenly contribute a temperature decrease. Overall, I think it’s quite a nice feeling just to think becoming part in fighting global warming.

Canang Sari Balinese Offering

One of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa leisure programs is Balinese Offering Creation Lesson. The Resort’s Florist share their experience on how Balinese make their daily offering to present to the temple. The class that is set in informal Balinese style way.

They gathered on traditional carpet called “tikar” made from dried plaited pandan leaf. Some fresh materials are needed on offering making such as young coconut leaves, variety of different colourful flowers including frangipani, cempaka, sandat, mitir, pacah and chopped scented pandan leaf.

The first lesson is making the structure of the base that is made from the banana leaf. The leaves cut in particular shape, chain one piece to another with semat ( bamboo tiny stick functioned as a staple) to make it perfect round form.

The next step is arranging the flowers, this step is much more easier than the banana structure, all you need is to place the flowers on top of the banana leaf base. The flowers will need to arrange so that it look colourful side by side. The chopped pandan leaf will be placed on top of the flowers.

The beautiful offering is now ready to present.

Seen on pictures are step by step and Dr Phillipa Leonard and Ms Deborah Cooke who were participating the offering making very recently with resort florist Kadek Agustini. They will bring the offering to the East Coast Tour the next day as one of the itineraries is visiting temple where the offering will be presented.
